St Jude's Anglican Church was built in 1871 and originally was simply adorned. Extensive alterations were made in the 1930s including paintings completed in 1936. Because of these paintings and artwork, St Jude's was designated a National Historic Site by the Canadian Government in 1996. The 'Arts and Crafts' paintings were created by the Browne family of artists. The 'Arts and Crafts' movement was popular in the U.K. at the turn of the 20th century and reacted against the influences of industrialization in architecture by integrating natural settings, colours and themes. The main focus of the artwork is a triptych of murals which, in succession around the nave, present events in the life of Jesus Christ from the proclaiming of his birth to His death and resurrection. |
