St John's Anglican Church

St John's (Stone) Church87 Carleton Street
St John, New Brunswick

St. John's (Stone) Church was completed in 1825 as a mission of Trinity Church, the city's first Anglican church.   The tower was built the following year but plans for erection of a spire were abandoned.   St John's was among the first stone structures in Saint John.   It is the oldest original church in the city centre having survived the Great Fire of 1877.

Most of the cost of construction was paid for by the British Crown and it was designated as a "garrison church" used by the militia troops.   Other funds required for construction were raised through the sale of pews.   The building's stone was brought out from England as ballast on ships on their return voyages.

St John's Anglican Church, St John, N.B. was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1989
