St Anne's Anglican, Toronto, Ontario

270 Gladstone Ave., Toronto, Ontario

The Byzantine style St Anne's Anglican Church, Toronto was built in 1907 replacing a traditional gothic structure.   The church seats about 1000 under a dome 55-feet in diameter.   The church is richly decorated in the Byzantine style, which had been intended from the start but was not completed until the 1920s when the funds became available.

Architect William Rae and Group of Seven artist J.E.H. MacDonald supervised decoration of the church in 1923.   Ten Toronto artists, including MacDonald, F.H. Varley and Franklin Carmichael, executed the paintings.   The artists worked independently from small-scale designs using a common colour scheme.

Shown is J.E.H. MacDonald's The Crucifixion painted between two of the arches that support the dome.
